Chemists had a ground-breaking event way back in the nineteenth century where a chemist discovered synthetic organic chemistry. It was Friedrich Wohler who discovered that he can produce urea without the production from a living kidney. This became the start of the production of synthetic organic chemicals and a variety of new complex compounds that chemists continue on studying.
Two Process for Synthetic Organic Chemistry
- Total Synthesis – this involves inorganic compounds as a starting material to produce new compounds that imitate a targeted molecule which could be natural products, organic compounds, or medicinal active ingredients. One of the purposes of total synthesis is the discovery of new chemical reagents.
- Semi-synthesis or partial chemical synthesis – is the process when using chemical compounds from isolated agent or organic sources to produce novel compounds that has a medicinal property. These compounds have high molecular weight and are complex molecule targets. When semi-synthesis is used for drug discovery they aim to focus on the medical activity of a certain compound and alter the molecular activity of it.
What Makes Up Synthetic Organic Chemistry
The characteristic that synthetic organic chemistry should have is to comprise a carbon atom since organic chemicals are mainly organic because of carbon atom. We should understand as well that we have natural organic chemicals wherein we get from the natural sources like the sun, the soil, the trees, the organic foods, and so on. Synthetic organic chemistry aims to produce chemicals that can be produced naturally but with the help of organic chemicals or even inorganic chemicals. They synthesize chemicals to further progress with the building of novel biological systems.
